More Improvements Slated for Downtown Redevelopment with Property Acquisition
The Council approved the purchase for property Monday October 4th at the Special Called Meeting at the Depot located at 5960 Athens Street and Ga Hwy 51 for $46,000 with the intention of developing additional downtown parking and possible other amenities . The City has 60 days to complete inspection of the property prior to closing.
The original asking price of the property was in excess of $116,000 but after evaluation the Mayor and Council were able to reach the purchase amount of $46,000. The Finance Committee (Marvin Moore and Matt Hamby) recommended the project acquisition to the full council. The city is having a conceptual design plan developed to best utilize the full use of the property with future input from the public.
The intentions of the Mayor and Council is to utilize Special Local Option Sales Tax funds to purchase and make improvements to the property in the coming months.
This project is a continuation of downtown redevelopment projects which have matured over the past 10 years, including the addition of the Veterans Park and Fountain, New Downtown Restrooms, Landscaping, Jenrette Park, completing 4 of 7 phases to the StreetScape Development along Main Street, Renovation of the “DEPOT” -Stage and Community Center, (2)Parking Additions and enhancement of Street Lighting, supporting development of existing businesses and attracting new business to a “walkable ” revitalization of old downtown .
